This week, the Year 6 children had a shock start to their time when an air-raid siren sounded and they evacuated the building!
As part of the ‘Peacekeeprs’ topic that Year 6 study in the Autumn Term, children read the text ‘Friend or Foe’ by Michael Morpurgo. To launch the book, the children are all given their identity tag and are evacuated from school into the gazebo. Here, they look at a suitcase filled with some of the items the children may have taken with them and they begin to make some simple predictions about the story and the characters. After the initial shock of the siren, the children enjoyed the experience and it gave them a small window into what it might have felt like. This will be important for later work writing diaries and letters as if they were in a new place in the countryside with a new family for the war.
