In PE this term, Year Two have been learning to play golf.
First, the children were introduced to the layout of a golf course. They learnt the names of the different areas including the fairway, the water, the rough and the bunker.
After that, the children started to think about how they could control a ball. Initially they did this by rolling a ball back and forth between themselves and a partner, thinking carefully about the amount of force that was needed. They then tried rolling the ball towards a target, thinking carefully about their aim. The children also completed a short obstacle course.
Next, it was time for the children to develop their putting skills. They practised holding the club correctly with their thumbs pointing down and both hands on the handle. The boys and girls learnt how to stand side on and aim by pointing their shoulder towards their target. Then they practised swinging the club back and forth in a ‘tick tock’ motion like the pendulum on a grandfather clock. Year Two worked hard to improve their putting skills, varying how hard they hit the ball to reach targets of varying distances.
