This week Nursery continued learning about mini-beasts with a focus on bees and worms.
We have enjoyed exploring our mini-topic of minibeasts and especially enjoyed this weeks adventure getting to know more about worms. We learnt about how useful worms can be for our gardens and the environment. We decided to make wormery’s so that we could observe how the worms move underground, in the classroom. We watched a video showing us how to make a wormery and then collected all of our materials. We needed;
- plastic bottles (with the bottle neck cut off)
- soil
- sand
- rubber bands
- plastic bags (cut into squares to cover the bottles)
- spades
- fallen leaves
We then spent time outside working together to make our wormery’s. We struck disaster though when we couldn’t find any worms to add to them once they were finished! We learnt that because the ground has been so dry recently, the worms would be far underground where it is still damp,. We have kept our wormery’s in Nursery and will go on a worm hunt again once the we have some more damp weather.
This week we also learnt about bees. We found out that they use flowers to collect pollen and nectar and take this back to their hive. The worker bees then spend time turning the pollen and nectar into yummy honey! We enjoyed making toasts and practiced using our knife spreading skills to spread runny honey onto our slices to eat during snack. it was super yummy but super sticky!
