All about the Birds

The children have embarked on a term filled with bird focused activities, inspired by the RSPB Big School Birdwatch that we take part in every year. We have been learning how to identify birds, comparing similarities and differences in class, then using games outside to hone their observation skills and to get the children moving in the cold. Also this week we set them a challenge, using a pile of logs taken from our dismantled play area, they had the create a class sized nest. We left the interpretation completely up to the children, it was very interesting to see the different dynamics in each class. Very different approaches each time. The children became so engrossed that they have asked to try again. Year 2 seemed to have the most success in terms of structure and shape particularly because they used the logs in different positions rather than just flat. Some introduced sticks, and Year 3 got there best inspiration about 3 minutes before we had to go in so they definitely want to try again. We will look at how birds structure nests through some traditional tales soon and this might help give the children some pointers from the experts.
