As we come to the end of the summer term, I would like to take this opportunity to reflect on the academic year at Harlow Green.
There is much to be proud of at our school. Both governors and staff feel immense pride in what we have offered and achieved together this year. Through our broad and balanced curriculum, children have not only developed strong subject knowledge and skills but have also enjoyed a wide range of enriching educational visits and inspiring visitors. Although these experiences are increasingly expensive, they have brought learning to life in ways that go far beyond what we can offer in the classroom alone.
Our comprehensive sports programme has continued to thrive, helping children to build confidence, develop their self-esteem, and maintain good health. This year, like in previous, our pupils have competed and performed to an exceptionally high standard, placing Harlow Green among the most successful schools in Gateshead.
In addition, our Forest School curriculum has provided valuable opportunities for children to connect with nature, work collaboratively, and grow personally. We know that other schools are now providing some forest school experiences, but at Harlow Green, we have continued to provide a full embedded curriculum across the whole of our school which is valued so highly by our children and their families.
Across everything we do, we remain committed to inclusivity – ensuring that children from all backgrounds and with additional needs are supported to achieve success both in the classroom and through our wider offer. Our society is diverse and as a community school we have always aimed to support every child whose parents/carers have chosen Harlow Green, especially where a child may need a greater level of care and consideration.
Despite all of these wonderful opportunities, we have remained fully focused on the core curriculum. Our pupils continue to achieve results above national averages by the end of Year 6. However, we believe that true progress lies in the development of each individual. Our holistic approach – one that values behaviour, attitude, and personal growth – creates a strong foundation for academic success, far beyond simply increasing time spent on English and maths.
As I mentioned in a previous message, events like our Summer Fayre truly highlight the strength of our school community. The way we come together for such occasions reflects the supportive relationships that exist between school and home throughout the year. We know that children thrive best when school and families work in partnership, and we are sincerely grateful for the support you continue to give us every day.
This year, we’ve welcomed a significant number of new families who have chosen Harlow Green for their children. It’s heartening to know that these families are drawn to what we offer and, more importantly, that they are warmly welcomed by our children, parents, and staff. We know they will benefit from being part of our community for years to come.
Of course, we never rest on our achievements. We are always striving to improve. In the coming year, we will be focusing on the following key areas:
- Continuing to develop our provision for children with additional needs, in line with Gateshead’s wider strategy.
- Strengthening our support for families to ensure every child has strong attendance and can access all the learning and experiences we offer.
- Expanding opportunities for outdoor play and learning, enhancing the school experience for every child.
Everything we achieve at Harlow Green is possible because of our shared commitment to the children of our community. As Head Teacher, I am proud of the high expectations we hold for ourselves, and I am equally proud of the strong partnerships we have with our families. Working together is how we ensure that each child grows to be happy, healthy, and successful.
On behalf of the governors and staff, I wish all our families a safe, enjoyable, and restful summer – however you choose to spend it.
Kind Regards,
Mr Malik
