Float to live! Water safety with Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue.

Today we were visited by Tommy from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service and he spent the whole morning in school from our youngest to our oldest, helping the children learn about water safety and some top tips for fire safety too.

In the morning, we held two assemblies, during which the children learned about the hidden dangers that can be in water – whether it is lakes, ponds, rivers and streams, and not just at the beach.  They key message was simply don’t go in – it is impossible to see all the dangers from the shore!  Should an emergency arise, the children learned about the right position to adopt to float to live, and how to use life belts and even footballs to help!  They also heard important messages about calling the emergency services and the information they might ask for.  At the end, the children had to try and explain what the flags at the beach told us.

They learned about the starfish position which helps us remain buoyant and this links to the life saving techniques the children learn during there swimming lessons in Key Stage 2.

We know when the weather gets warmer, cooling off in water can be tempting, but there are so many risks!  As we come closer to the end of term, this was a vital message to send out to all of our children.

Tommy also then spent some time in Reception and Nursery where he talked to the children about being safe at home and looking after each other.  They also go to try on some of the kit too and see how heavy it was!

The children from Year 1-6 were asked to take home two key facts to share with someone else – see what yours might be able to remember.
