Speech Rules
As part of our grammar lessons, Year 5 have been learning about the rules for writing direct speech.
In preparation for our next piece of writing, a narrative extract based on Grendel’s next adventure, the children have been exploring the key grammatical rules for punctuating speech. They identified the importance of using inverted commas around the spoken words, including appropriate punctuation such as commas, question marks and exclamation marks, and adding a reporting clause to tell the reader who is speaking and how.
The children then used prompts to help them include each of these key elements, carefully organising their ideas and punctuation to construct a complete piece of direct speech. This has helped them develop their understanding of how to structure speech correctly, ready to bring their characters to life in their upcoming narrative writing!
