Friction Investigation
Year 5 put their scientific skills to the test last week when they investigated friction.The children used Newton metres to measure the amount of force needed to pull a shoe across three different surfaces: gravel, a table and carpet. They made predictions about which surface they thought would require the most force and then carried out a fair test to see if their predictions were correct.
The children carefully observed the readings on the Newton metres and compared their results, thinking about how the texture and roughness of a surface can affect friction. They discovered that some surfaces create more friction than others, meaning that a greater force is needed to move an object across them.
Year 5 worked collaboratively to take accurate measurements, recording their results and discuss what their findings told them about friction.
