Extraordinary Egyptians

Year 3 have thoroughly enjoyed stepping back in time to learn about the fascinating world of the ancient Egyptians! They began by exploring how archaeologists use artefacts and evidence to find out about life thousands of years ago and discovered why the River Nile was so important for farming, transport and daily life.

The boys and girls then learned about some of the advances made by the ancient Egyptians, including mummification and their unique writing system, hieroglyphs. The children ordered the steps of the mummification process and wrote their own explanations. They found it both equally fascinating and gruesome. They then created personalised cartouches using hieroglyphs to spell their names.

To finish, the children learned about the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb and got into character to write their own diary entries as Howard Carter on the day he discovered all of the ‘wonderful things’. They were thoughtful in their responses to the question, ‘Was it theft?’ and gave reasons for their opinion.
