Dissolving Solids

This week in Science, Year 5 answered the question: Does sugar dissolve more quickly in warm or cold water?

Before conducting their experiment, the children worked collaboratively to design a fair test. We discussed the different types of variables, identifying the independent variable (the temperature of the water), the dependent variable (the time taken for the sugar to dissolve) and the controlled variables (such as the amount of sugar, volume of water and stirring method), to ensure their results would be reliable.

Then, the children carefully carried out their investigations in the following lesson, timing how long the sugar took to dissolve in both warm and cold water. They worked scientifically by making careful observations and recorded their results accurately.

After conducting their experiment, the children discovered that the sugar dissolved more quickly in the warm water because particles move faster, allowing the sugar to dissolve more rapidly.
