Year 6 Poetry Week

During Poetry Week, Year 6 explored the work of poet John Agard, enjoying the opportunity to study his use of language, rhythm and expression. The children brought poetry to life by performing their chosen poems for one another, developing their confidence and expressive reading skills. They then investigated the structure of Ottava Rima poetry, learning about its eight-line stanzas, ten-syllable lines and distinctive rhyming pattern. Using this structure, the children crafted their own thoughtful poems inspired by poppies and remembrance, reflecting on the importance of remembering those who have served and sacrificed.

To conclude their poetry journey, Year 6 explored free verse poetry, using powerful vocabulary and imagery to convey the harsh realities of life in the trenches during the First World War. They carefully considered the experiences and emotions of soldiers, creating moving and imaginative poems that captured the fear, hardship and uncertainty of trench life. Throughout the week, the children demonstrated creativity, empathy and a growing appreciation of how poetry can communicate powerful messages and preserve important memories from the past.
