Tree Identification - Nuts & Seeds
The children have been continuing to be learn how to identify trees by becoming woodland detectives in our Forest School. This week they consolidated their tree knowledge by playing games on the Woodland Trust activities website. Here there are a variety of games and quizzes that help the children really hone in on leaves, twigs, nuts and seeds, tree shape and seed dispersal. This will help their ability to identify trees no matter the season.
Once outside they then went foraging for nuts and seeds, berries and hips. The younger children worked with the Year 6 Outdoor Workers to rummage through the undergrowth. They found an abundance of woodland goodies; rosehips, conkers with shells, hazelnuts, crab apples, acorns and hornbeam berries. They were also really excited to find half eaten nuts, definitely some squirrel activity going on at Harlow Green. They sorted their finds in a variety of ways then had to explain why they had grouped them that way. Some grouped by colour, others but type or shape. Miss Rowe opened up some of the nuts for them to see inside and some children decided to take acorns home for planting. After all that hard work the children were rewarded with some tasty apples from our own trees.
