Sea Shells
As part of our art topic this term, we have been observing, drawing and sculpting shells.
Firstly, we observed real shells and pictures of shells and noticed patterns and shapes within them. The children saw lots of patterns including spirals, scallops, stripes and spikes. We had fun using shade and tone to draw shells in our sketch books and we also followed a video tutorial to draw a fan-shaped shell.
Next, we learnt about the American artist Georgia O’Keefe. She painted large shells. Everyone used oil pastels to copy her painting entitled “A pink shell with sea weed.” We became experts at blending the colours together.
Finally, we learnt about the sculptor Marc Quinn. He used materials such as gold, glass and bronze to sculpt shells. Using clay, everyone attempted to sculpt a shell. The results were amazing and a cacophony of shells were created including scalloped shells, whelks and cones.
