Family Trees

In our Forest School sessions children are learning about tree identification. In Year 2 we talked about tree families, deciduous or broad leaf trees compared to evergreen or coniferous. We played some identification games, then the children were set a challenge. They had to go into the woods and collect leaves to represent the members of their family. They could choose which family members they wanted to include and how they allocated the leaves. Whether all humans had the same leaf, some had different leaves for male and female, others different for pets. Some children also identified the trees the leaves came from and labelled them. After all this hard work the children had some time to explore the woods freely, they found all sorts of interesting things, sticky buds, helicopter seeds and even a wood pigeon on her nest.

The Nature Principle: Forest school takes place in a woodland or natural wooded environment to support the development of a relationship between the learner and the natural world.
