This week in DT our Year 4 children have been busy developing their sewing skills by creating their very own hand puppets!
The project began with the children exploring different puppet designs. They sketched their ideas, selected suitable materials and planned how they would join their fabric pieces together.
A key focus of this unit was developing sewing techniques. The children practised and then applied different types of stitches: running stitch and over stitch. They learned how running stitch can be used to join fabric pieces neatly, while over stitch helps to secure edges and prevent fraying. It was wonderful to see their concentration, resilience and improving control as they threaded needles, tied knots and stitched carefully along their seams.
Once assembled, the children added decorative features such as buttons, felt shapes and embroidered details to bring their characters to life. Each puppet has its own unique personality, and the creativity on display has been fantastic!
We are incredibly proud of their hard work and can’t wait for you to see the finished puppets.
