This week, year 4 have begun studying their new English text called ‘When The Mountains Roared’. It is a gripping story about a girl who moves from Australia with her father and grandmother to run a hotel in the mountains of India. It is a story full of suspense, drama and peril, and the children are already hooked! After a brief introduction, they described what they know, think and wonder about about the story. The children used their imaginations brilliantly to describe many interesting ideas. They then took a closer look at the vocabulary choices of the author. After identifying different word classes used in a descriptive extract, they suggested synonyms or alternative vocabulary. They then rewrote the extract using their own choice of vocabulary. Next, the children explored the feelings of the main character Ruby, looking for evidence of what she is feeling on the inside, and the emotions she is displaying on the outside. Finally, the children used their sequencing and summarising skills to create a story map of the key events they have read about so far.
