Reader’s Theatre : A First Session

This week, the Year 6 children have been doing something a little bit different in guided reading – a programme called Reader’s Theatre.

This involved the children having a text modelled to them where they could hear it being read for fluency, expression and intonation. Over the week, they then worked in threes to talk about why the text would be read this way and the impact that it would have on the reader. They then text-marked and considered how they would read – where they would be silent, where they would add expression, when they might use a different voice for a character. It was lovely to see the collaboration and discussion between the children throughout the whole week.

On the Friday, each group then performed for the class and we all reflected upon what was effective about each performance. It was interesting to hear the children talking about the difference it made when people were clear or when they used appropriate expression or silence to create some tension.
