Today, Year 6 were visited by St John Ambulance to learn about how to react to an emergency and also learn some basic first aid.
The session started by remembering/learning of the two emergency numbers the children might have to call – 999 and 112. The children discussed what they might need to say when the call is answered and the importance of being able to give an address and postcode or location so that the emergency services could respond.
They then looked at how they might treat a casualty, carrying out a primary survey of DANGER, RESPONSE, AIRWAY, BREATHING and CIRCULATION. After this, the children learnt how to put a casualty into the recovery position and they all had fun trying this out with a partner! Cuts, scrapes and bleeding were also discussed and the children learnt some basic bandaging skills. The session finished with a chance to ask questions.
The children thoroughly enjoyed the session and participated with both enthusiasm and respect.
