Year 1 spent a lovely afternoon finding out about the common creatures that are under Gnome protection in our gardens. Many mini-beasts were temporarily removed from their homes onto a large white sheet ready for sorting.
After examining each beast the children decided that there would be separate groups for snails, slugs, six legs, eight legs, then many legs. The tricky bit was keeping the many legged beasts, millipedes and centipedes, from running away. We talked about whether these creatures should be protected, are slugs and snails actually pests? The children felt that though they can eat our plants, they are also food for birds and of course are great fun to play with. Currently we are putting broken egg shells around our vegetable garden in a hope to protect them from slugs but on the rest of our site we are happy to let nature take it’s course.
