The school is open on thursday 7th January.
Due to the weather conditions and lack of available teaching staff, the school will unfortunately be closed on Wednesday 6th Januray. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.
During Enterprise Week we were lucky enough to be visited by the 'Mad Hatters.' The name sounded exciting and we were certainly not disappointed. The activity involved designing, making and marketing our own hat! We found out lots about how businesses work and how to work as a team.
Welcome back to a New Year! This term out topic will be Ancient Egypt, where we will explore the wonders of the Nile, Egyptian Gods and Goddesses and the children's favourite- mummies and tombs!!!
Year 4 Topics this year will include:
Going on Safari
Polar regions
Crime and Punishment
Ancient Egypt
The World Cup (well you can't have a World Cup with England in and not do something on it can you?)
A Big Thank you to all the friends and family who came to watch Year 4s assembly on Friday 6th November. As always your support was much appreciated. The children really enjoyed sharing what they have learnt with you. We hope it taught you someting new too about 'Life on a Safari.'
In maths week we had great fun designing our own maths characters and slogans. However, the highlight of the week was BIG WRITING. We worked in pairs to produce times tables raps to help us learn our tables and then performed them. Mr Allen was really pleased with them, particular highlights included Aaron's accent and Rebecca and Jack's dancing. If you would like to see the completed videos please ask Mr Allen.
The Year 4 team this year is Mr Allen, Mrs Lewis and Mrs Madgewick. And of course the most important people in the team - the children and parents!
Year 4 recently visited Heworth Grange CLC to do a project titled Johnny Starr. The children watched a cartoon that had no sound effects. As a class they were then divided into groups; some using computers to produce sounds, a group producing and recording the theme tune; some writing the script; and a group using digital music effects. We can't wait to receive a DVD with the end results!
This year your children may have come home and mentioned a strange phenomenon called BIG Writing? Or puppets named Arwin and Victor? Or candles and classical music? Friday mornings have changed forever for children in Harlow Green. They are Big Writing time! During this time the children are introduced to different text types and write for a specific ppurpose each time. They play word games and use this to help structure and improve their sentences. We hope you have noticed the improvement it has led to in their writing.
Year 4 recently spent a highly enjoyable day at greenwell farm. The day started with a visit to the woodland and a chance to see the tadpoles in the stream. The children were then set the task of building a den in the trees using a sheet and some string. Some highly creattive efforts were built, although I'm not sure that anyone would have liked being under them in the rain. in the afternoon the children were introduced to the cattle and were rather concerned by the size of the bulls!!
While learning portrait skills, pupils in Year 4 tried their best to capture the best sides of the staff. Thankfully they were successful in getting the lady's just right, how could they go wrong I hear you say! However, I still think Mr Hilton and Mr Allen need some serious work, but maybe cosmetic surgeons are the real answer!
Well done to all our artists, you really had to use all your artistic skills and imaginations to create those wonderful portraits.
Thanks from all the Year 4 staff, we are very proud of them all.
During the Autumn term the children of Year 4 learnt about the Inuit People of the Arctic Region. They have investigated how Inuits survive in the harsh Arctic Climate, (a little like Harlow Green when it snows!), the close relationship the Inuits have with the environment around them, but most of all, Year 4 explored the importance of story-telling to keeping Inuit traditions alive.
We created our own tales with mythical creatures and natural gods, we practiced being Shamen and guardians of tradition, but best of all we told stories to each other, creating exciting images to teach a message of community.
To show how good we are at sending messages, we even created our own TV show "Polar Perils'. Everyone was involved from the writing of the script, to presenting the show, to directing the guests and even to creating the props and power points to make the shows dynamic and give it the 'WOW' factor!
This term our topic of study is 'Around the World in 8o Days'. However, unlike the story by Jules Verne, our adventures wont be led by Mr Phileas Fogg, but a rather strange group of explorers and characters from the North East of England!
Our first port of call is Africa, where we learn all about the people and culture of this wild and exciting land. Mr Allen and Mr Hilton will even be learning to dance in their wellies, as the famous African Gum Boot Dancers visit Harlow Green. (Pictures to follow!)
From Africa we travel to the Caribbean and South America. Here we will investigate how the history of a region, can transformed it into one of the strangest and most wonderful places to visit in the world. We will also be meeting some famous historical characters, so watch out for land shipmates, as we travel into the unknown!
We realise that some of the methods that our children use may be different from those that you are familiar with so we thought a few handy hints for helping with homework might come in useful.
1.) Times Tables: There is no easy way to learn these its just practise, practise and more practise. Your children will know which are their target tables.
2.) Time: Get your children using timetables, TV mags, bus schedules etc to practise time.
3.) Money: Involve your children in shopping to practise their mental maths and become accustomed to real life money problems.
4.) Shapes: Shapes are all around us. Get your children to look at the world around them and describe facts about the shapes that they can see.
5.) Measuring: Get your childrn involved in cooking, decorating etc where they can use measuring equipment in real life situations.
Other methods your children should be able to explain to you but if you do have any problems feel free to contact us at any time.
We are going to cover lots of exciting and creative topics this year to allow us to learn, have fun and achieve our potential.
Heroes: We will investigate different superheroes, their logos and their special powers. Perhaps more importantly we will consider the heroes around us and the special qualities that everyday people have.
Polar: We will examine the environmental issues suroounding the polar regions and how they affect the world and the community we live in. We will also look at the animals that inhabit these regions.
Around the World in 80 Days: Phileus Fogg made his journey around the world on a hot air balloon, train and boat. We are going to follow his journey to discover amazing and exciting facts abut different peoples and cultures.
Ancient Egypt: We are going to plunge the depths of Ancient Egypt to explore their beliefs and customs. The children will be going on visits to look at Egyptian artefacts.
The Body: As we are becoming more health conscious we will look at how the body works, how to keep it healthy and how to look after it.
