The school is open on thursday 7th January.
Due to the weather conditions and lack of available teaching staff, the school will unfortunately be closed on Wednesday 6th Januray. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.
As part of our topic we went to Beamish to experience what life used to be like in the North East. We travelled on a tram, visited the shops and took a scary trip down the mine.
We got to experience school life and saw how lucky we are now! We saw how people lived, worked and played in the past and compared it our lives today.
In the Autumn term our topic is The North East. We will be finding out about how the North East has changed through time, for example in industry, the rivers and bridges. We will be visiting the Angel of the North and Beamish Museum to experience what life was like in the past. We will be reading and learning about North East stories and use these to develop skills in all areas of the curriculum such as art, ICT, DT, Literacy, drama and science.
In science we will be looking at a plants and animals, and a variety of materials and their properties. In PE we will be developing our gymnastics, dance and team game skills.
In the Spring term we had lots of fun learning about pirates. We got dressed up and had a pirate day where we searched the school for a hidden treasure chest. We finally found the treasure in Mrs Stephensons room!
Pirates invaded all areas of our curriculum. In ICT we drew our own pirate pictures. Here are some examples of our work:

As part of Art, DT, PHSE, History, and Geography we all worked together in our groups to create our own treasure islands.
Maths
To help your child develop their maths skills here are some tips for things to do at home:
Empty your pockets!
Can your child name the spare coins you have? Can they select the right coins to pay for an item in a shop?
How long is a piece of string?
Encourage your child to help you measure ingredients using appropriate equipment. Compare heights in your household, who is the tallest?
Got your number!
Encourage your child to read numbers on buses, doors, signs, etc. Count in steps of 2, 5 and 10 instead of only 1s. Practice sharing using fruits or sweets.
This academic year we are studying the following topics:
The North East
Winter
Pirates
Dinosaurs
Children during World War 2
In Year 2 during the spring term we are currently looking at the topic of Islands. We have researched a number of islands and we are going to create our own island designs. We will be basing a lot of our work around the Katie Morag stories and comparing the mythical Isle of Struay to the Isle of Coll in Scotland.
During the summer term we will be looking at two different topics; dinosaurs and children during World War 2. This will give the children the opportunity to learn about two exciting eras from the past.
