This term year 5 had a trip to the Heworth Grange CLC to learn about 'Controlling Devices' and 'Data Logging' using their magnificent computers.
Once we got there we split into two groups and did opposite activities.
Controlling Devices.
We learned about all types of sensors that we use in everyday life and sensors we didn't know existed. After that we had to program and set up our own control device to make a set of traffic lights, light up in the correct way!
Once we had mastered the traffic lights, we had to use a variety of techniques to make different sensors work, including lights, a spinning bow tie and a buzzer.
Data Logging
In this part, we looked at how information is collected and used in different areas. We found out how valuable information is and its importance in our world. Together we collected data on sound levels (db) and light levels (LUX). We had fun collecting the data, especially the football chanting for our noise level recording.
Here is a picture of a data logging machine:
We had a lot of fun at the CLC and learned some great new things. The whole of year 5 can't wait for our next trip...wherever it may be!
